For the example in the Youtube I will be adding fabric to my Mandala Crochet dress pattern, in the photo tutorial I will adding a fabric skirt to my Sunburst Crochet Dress pattern, both patterns are avaliable via in my Etsy store. If you are following onto this tutorial from my Free Crochet Dress Pattern the method is the same.
- Fabric of your choice. I recommend to double the width of the circumference of the area you want for a childs & 1 1/2 widths for an adult, plus add 4cm to the overall length you would like.
Circumference of my girls top 40cm in total = 80cm width of fabric
Length I would like 24cm = 28cm length in total
Circumference 80cm = 120cm width of fabric
Length I would like 35cm = 39cm length
- Matching thread to your fabric & your crochet piece
- Sewing machine
Step 1. Wash & iron your fabric before use as new fabric will naturally shrink once washed. Cut your fabric to your calculated dimentions.
Step 2. With your fabric face to face sew along the width to create a tube. Overlock or use a zigzag stitch along the edge.
Step 3. Overlock or use a zigzag stitch along the top seam (this will be where the crochet top attaches to the skirt) to prevent fraying.
Step 4. Turn up the bottom of the fabric by 1cm, fold again along this fold creating a 2cm fold enclosing the bottom rough edge of the fabric. Sew along this fold to create the hem of the bottom of your dress.
Step 5. Using the longest stitch on your machine sew 1cm around the top of the fabric leaving a 1inch gap before meeting the beginning. Repeat this step 0.5cm from the top of your fabric, creating a dounle seam. Ensure to leave long thread tails!
Step 6. Mark on your fabric the half way point from the side seam, this will help you gather your fabric evenly around the skirt.
Step 7. Pull on the end of the thread tails (this will start to gather your fabric). Continue to gather your fabric around evenly (the halfway mark will help you create an even gather) until the fabric reduces to the size of your crochet garment circumference.
Step 8. Aline the halfway mark with either the center front or the side seam. Evenly pin your fabric inside the bottom edge of your crochet item.
Step 9. Ensure your top thread matches the colour of your crochet item while the bottom matches the fabric. Now sew together the crochet top & fabric together 1cm from the top edge of your fabric all the way around.
Step 10. Carefully unpick the two lines of gathering stitches (as now the gathered fabric is attached to the crochet item) & remove all the threads.
Congratulations you have finished! I would love to see your creations!
